Warming up before class is essential for preventing injury and conditioning muscles to work in their proper way. A well structured warm up prepares the body for movement and enhances performance ability. Basically being well warmed up and prepared for class will definitely show up later in your dancing. So here are a few benefits for committing to a great warm up every class!
1.SHOULD I BE STRETCHING?
Those scenes of dancers sliding down into the splits to ‘warm up’ for class in movies, is definitely not going to prepare your body for class. It is a very big misconception to stretch before a dance class in order to be flexible to dance. A warm up should be exactly what it sounds like; it should warm your body up and get your muscles working. Once you feel warm and ready for movement then it’ll be safe to stretch what you feel is needed.
2. WARM UPS FOR BALLET
Little exercises like pliés and tendus can be a great way to get your body in the ballet mode and ready for barre. These basic yet foundational ballet movements engage leg muscles and warm up the articulation in the feet. These simple exercises enhance your posture and alignment as well.
3. KNOWING WHAT TO DO
If you’re just beginning your dance journey and may not feel completely comfortable knowing what warm up exercises to do then this might just help you! First of all a warm up should consist of some cardio or conditioning. This could be lunges, crunches, running on the spot, jumping jacks, or even push ups. Once you're feeling warmer and your heart rate is up you can try some dynamic stretches like torso twists or downward dogs to help stretch out those calves.
A proper warm-up sets the stage for a strong, injury-free dance class. By focusing on movement, muscle engagement, and gradual intensity, you’ll enhance your flexibility, strength, and technique. Take the time to prepare—your dancing will thank you!
