4 tips to learn more about Dance etiquette

Updated: Dec 14, 2024

Starting a new hobby, especially dance, can sometimes be daunting. Are you unsure about what to do or whether you’re doing things right? Don’t worry! Here is a quick guide to some simple dance tips to help you feel more confident and comfortable in our classes.

1.RESPECTING OTHER DANCERS

Respect for others and teachers is extremely important in any dance class. This means trying your best to be on time or if possible even a few minutes early so that you can start warming up, getting used to the space or just catch up with the people in your class. When you come to a class your focus should only be on the class and not trying to get out earlier or dipping out to make a phone call. You’re setting aside this time to focus on yourself and dancing so all other worries can be put on hold.

2.STEPPING AWAY FROM OUR PHONES

When it comes to mobile phones, it is expected that you don’t go on your phone during class. Out of respect for the teacher, everyone else and your own time in the dance class, normally phones should be left in your bag, or coat and typically shouldn’t be taken out at all during the lesson. You should treat any dance class like you would any other lesson. This is your time to give your full attention to yourself and the class.

3.EMBRACE SOCIALISING!

Socializing is a big part of any dance class. You are sharing this time of your day learning and having fun with other people so you should feel more than welcome to talk to those around you and make everyone feel welcome and included. Most of our classes are dedicated to beginners so don’t feel as if you are ever alone as there is probably someone else there who is totally new to this too. And remember everyone is there for their own reasons so treat everyone with respect and kindness.

4.DRESSING THE PART

Dressing appropriately for class is crucial for your comfort and safety. This would mean for ballet, avoiding any loose or baggy clothes and wearing more tight fitting clothing like leotards, tights or leggings. This also includes footwear. If and when possible it is advised to dance with ballet flats.

CONCLUSION

Dance is a complex sport and artform. It requires dedication and respect. Hopefully this gives you more of an insight into the structure of a dance class and some more knowledge on how to create a safe, supportive, and kind environment to dance in.
