5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Adult Contemporary Dance Class

Adult contemporary dance classes are a great way to explore movement, build strength and coordination, and discover new ways of expressing yourself. Whether you’re completely new to contemporary dance or returning after some time away, knowing how to approach class can help you feel more confident and get more out of the experience.

Here are five tips to help you feel prepared and ready to move.

1. Don’t Worry About Getting Everything “Right”

Contemporary dance isn’t only about mastering steps. It’s also about exploring how you move. Your teacher might ask you to experiment with weight, momentum, dynamics, musicality, or different movement qualities. You may even be given moments to improvise or make your own movement choices.

Give yourself permission to explore. There isn’t always one “correct” way to move.

2. Get Comfortable Using the Floor

Unlike many other dance styles, contemporary dance often involves moving between standing and the floor. You might roll, slide, kneel, sit, or use your hands to support your weight. Pay attention to how your teacher demonstrates getting into and out of the floor rather than focusing only on the final position. With practice, these transitions will begin to feel more natural and fluid.

3. Use Your Whole Body

Contemporary dance encourages you to move beyond simply learning what your arms and legs are doing.

Think about your:

  • Head

  • Spine and torso

  • Hands and feet

  • Breath

  • Weight and momentum

Sometimes a small shift in your focus, breath, or upper body can completely change how a movement feels.

4. Wear Clothes You Can Move In

You don’t need special dancewear for contemporary class. Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to stretch, bend, roll, and move freely. Leggings, loose fitting pants, fitted tops, T-shirts, or other comfortable athletic clothing can all work well. Contemporary dance is also often practiced barefoot or in socks, depending on the class and studio. If you’re unsure, check with your teacher beforehand.

5. Give Yourself Space to Learn

Contemporary combinations can involve changes in direction, levels, rhythm, and movement quality all at once. It can feel like a lot when you're starting out! Watch the teacher carefully, mark the movement when you need to, and allow yourself time to understand how the combination feels in your own body.

You don’t have to dance exactly like the teacher or the person next to you. Part of contemporary dance is discovering your own quality of movement.

Final Thought

The best way to get the most out of contemporary dance class is to stay curious. Come ready to learn, experiment, and experience movement in a new way. You don't need previous dance experience, perfect flexibility, or the “right” kind of body to begin. Give yourself permission to try, make mistakes, and enjoy moving.
