Why Dance should be your New Year’s Resolution

Happy New Year friends! Can you believe that it’s already 2022?! You have officially delivered all the gifts to your loved ones, enjoyed a feast with delicious food and enjoyed your time relaxing. 2021 was a rather interesting year, but we hope that you enjoyed your holiday season and that it was filled with cheer! What better way to say hello to new beginnings than a New Year! 2022 offers new opportunities, new blessings and re-connecting to the things you once loved before. Now is the perfect time to have a fresh start, get fit and have fun through dance. Here are 5 reasons why dance should be your New Year’s Resolution

1. A fun way to get fit.

It comes to no surprise that January is the month of setting goals, high aspirations and of course “new year new me”. While this is a really good mindset, sometimes this entails a ton of people who register for new gym memberships leaving the gym filled with a bunch of people with a limited amount of space for you to do your workout, not to mention, you might have to queue up for machines (not fun or efficient). The “New year, New me” mindset has good intent, a lot of people tend to give up or get caught up with life within the first 3 weeks of the New year—hence 3 weeks later, you’re back to the same routine you were in before the holidays. A new way to not only get fit but actually enjoy it is through Dance. Dance is a great way to be able to get your workout in but actually have fun while doing it, and with as little commitment as once a week you can actually work it around your schedule and actually keep your New Years’ resolution throughout the year!

2. Gets you closer to your creative side

If one of your New Years’ resolutions is to get more creative, dance is a fantastic way to do so! Diving into creative movement and dance is just one of many ways to boost your creativity and develop personal and professional skills. Dance challenges our coordination, memory, confidence and builds strong connections. In general, creativity is a much needed skill in our fast-paced world where every sector is focused on innovation and the creation of new and better ideas. If you find yourself diving into the same old ways of boosting your creativity we recommend exploring new styles or ways of moving to find your inner artist and storyteller or just to start your personal creative journey. 2022 could be the year to get in touch with your inner artist and find new ways to be able to unlock hidden talents, ideas, emotions and your inner creative through movement.

3. Helps you get outside of your comfort zone and make you happier.

It comes to no surprise that dance could make you happier, however it can be a daunting thing, dancing in front of people you don’t know in a class filled with many people; however it can be a great way to get outside of your comfort zone. You can start at your own pace, and work your way up from there! At the end of the year, not only will you learn how to dance, but you will be able to have the confidence to showcase it either in your room, in class, or at a party!

4. A great stress reliever

The holidays are already a highly stressful time, and going back into routine can also be stressful. A great way to get into the habit of relieving stress is through dance. Dancing gets you out of your head, encourages you to let go of tension , most notably in the shoulders and just have fun. You can set aside a day to let loose, enjoy a day of dance and let go of all the worries you have. To be able to get out of your head and just have fun, dance with your friends and let go is a great stress reliever!

5. A great way to meet new people!

If your New Years’ resolution is to be able to meet new people and make some amazing friends then dance can be a fantastic way to do so! Dance has a powerful way of bringing people together whether it’s when you are watching it or actually dancing. Dance can be a great way to make new friends if you just moved to a new city or just connect with your community in a new lens. Connecting with people through something you love can be a great way to start a new year and new decade!

While the New year does offer a new reach of opportunity and blessings, I encourage you to take care of yourself. You don’t need to do everything all at once, you can start with one small thing for your new year’s resolution and work your way up. You do not have to change yourself completely, just enjoy your own company and do things you love. We know that the past 2 years have been harder than ever and we hope that you are doing okay! Remember you got this, and dance is always here for you!
